DOLCE AND GABBANA HAS LAUNCHED ITS FIRST COLLECTION OF HIJABS

Without looking at the rest of the news for a hot second, let’s bask in the warm glow of 2016 and the promise of a year that gets it right. Case in point: today Dolce and Gabbana launched their first line of hijabs and abayas.

The collection is currently up at Style.com/Arabia, and — as described by i-D — features “hijabs in very expensive-looking black silk and satiny beige charmeuse.” There are prints, there are florals, there is lace, and the abayas complement the hijabs perfectly (because duh—imagine Dolce and Gabbana doing anything else).

Of course, if you’ve been following Stefano Gabbana, you saw this coming. The designer spoke to the Middle-Eastern newspaper, The National, in July and alluded to the collection he previewed on Instagram today.

“I’m really fascinated with the Middle East and we’ve just completed a pret-a-porter collection of abayas and sheylas,” he said. “Pieces have some lace, embroidery, and some prints — but not too much.”

And it’s about time. Muslims make up 22% of shoppers, so it’s time to include a market that is projected to spend $484 billion on clothes and shoes by 2019. Thankfully, Dolce and Gabbana isn’t the first high-end line to get on board: Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY, and Monique Lhuillier have all released capsule collections, and Uniqlo saw designer Hana Tajima launch a line of hijabs, blouses and skirts back in the summer.

So let’s hope this is just the start of even more collections that prioritize inclusion and showcase all aspects of fashion and style over the year. (I mean, why not? We’ve still got 360 days to go.)
